He shared Sooner memorabilia, a love of dogs, Johnnie's burgers, sailing, and a distaste for any and all vegetables with his grandchildren. He even tried his hand at cutting horses!īeing a grandfather was David's greatest love, and Papa Dave traveled to Maryland, Hong Kong, NYC, Bahrain, LA and Colorado to read his grandkids bedtime stories and watch their rugby tournaments, gymnastics competitions, and lacrosse games, to name a few. Away from the water, however, Windance Ranch in Guthrie, OK, provided great solace where he spent his days riding his tractor and tending his cattle. Most summer weekends in the 1980s, he could be found tinkering on his sailboat, the Windance. In the 1970s, he raced sailboats in the Caribbean and cruised the world forming strong and lasting friendships. Through his travels, he earned a reputation as an honest and loyal man who was always good for a laugh with new friends and co-workers.ĭavid's love of sailing began on Lake Hefner in Oklahoma City and took him on adventures around the globe. After selling the dealerships in 1980, he served as Chairman and CEO of American First Corporation in Oklahoma City, a restaurant entrepreneur in Houston and Chicago, and a ship Captain and yacht broker in Southern California from 1997 until his death. For sixteen years, he owned Dave Markley Ford dealerships, first in Yukon, OK, then Dallas, TX. His favorite hobby over the years was throwing the ball with his kids and grandkids.ĭavid had an eclectic professional career. ![]() His lifelong love of Sooner football was born during his college years, and through his final days, his friends and family knew where to find him on Saturday afternoons. The friendships he formed in these early years remained strong throughout his life and travels. While attending the University of Oklahoma, he served as president of Sigma Nu fraternity before graduating in 1964. He was a well-liked young man and quarterback of the Wildcats football team. Most of David's youth was spent in Bartlesville, OK, where he graduated from Bartlesville College High School in 1960. He was born on Decemin Oklahoma City, OK, to Pat and Howard Markley. David Markley died of a heart attack on Januin Dana Point, CA.
